Rolfing® Questions
For a particular pain, injury, nerve impingement, or restriction, sessions are scheduled according to the problem and your response.
Some people need only a few focused sessions. Others choose more extensive work.
Clients interested in comprehensive whole-body Structural Integration may undertake the Rolfing® Ten Series.
Rolfing® is a highly interactive process. I assess your posture and movement while you are standing, walking, and moving during the session, and I need to be able to see and work with the structural relationships of the body.
For men: briefs or boxer briefs.
For women: a bra and underwear, or a two-piece swimsuit.
Please avoid X-back sports bras and restrictive tops, since much of the work may involve the back, shoulders, and rib cage.
If you have concerns about attire or comfort, please contact me before your first session.
Rolfing® can occasionally feel intense, particularly when we are working with longstanding restrictions, adhesions, or a sensitive area associated with an injury.
Pressure and technique are adjusted throughout the session according to the tissue and your response. Communication during the work is important.
I generally do not give clients a routine of corrective exercises following Rolfing® sessions.
The structural change is produced through the work we do together in the session. I encourage natural movement afterward so you can experience how your body reorganizes around that change.
For people interested in maintaining flexibility, balance, movement, and body awareness over the long term, I particularly value yoga with a skilled teacher.
Most people can return to ordinary daily activity immediately.
Some mild tenderness may occur in an area that received substantial work, especially after treatment of an injury or longstanding restriction.
I recommend giving heavily worked areas approximately two to three days away from strenuous resistance exercise. Normal movement and lighter activity can continue.
The immediate objective depends upon why you came.
For pain or injury work, we are looking for reductions in restriction and improvements in movement and function.
For athletes and active people, the goal may include greater range of motion, freedom of movement, and improved structural organization.
The Ten Series addresses the body comprehensively through a systematic progression of whole-body Structural Integration.
Rolfing® Structural Integration is a distinct form of hands-on structural work developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf.
The work addresses fascia, movement, and structural relationships throughout the body with the aim of improving mobility, balance, organization, and function.
Yes. A significant part of my practice involves people exploring whether modifiable structural and soft-tissue factors can be improved before making a final decision about surgery.
Rolfing® may be particularly relevant when pain or loss of function involves restrictions in fascia, movement, muscular relationships, or surrounding structural mechanics.
Medical diagnosis and decisions concerning surgery remain with your physician or surgeon.
